Kieler Woche

More than 130 years ago, every June since 1882, the coastal city of Kiel (capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein on the shore of the Baltic Sea) has been hosting an urban exhibition and sailing contest called Kieler Woche. Since 1959, the event’s integrated visual identity and poster have been unveiled at the same time as the competitions. These design practices are selected from among the works of the world’s most prominent designers, who are invited to take part in the competition. It has been almost five decades since Kieler Woche’s visual identity design turned into an international contest.

The core concept of the visual identity is rooted in the fusion of Persian forms, including Muqarnas and Girih tiles, with a contemporary and universal visual language. The rhythmic repetition of these forms aims to evoke imagery reminiscent of ocean waves, the horizon, and dynamic typography that symbolizes the elements of sailing. In conclusion, while subtly influenced by the designer’s cultural heritage, these designs exemplify the adaptability of Persian geometric patterns for the development of international event designs.
